#2: What Do You Want?
When designing your balcony or terrace, we need to start by asking yourself, “What do I want?” It seems obvious, yet it’s easy to forget to focus and instead be blinded by what you’ve got – a small rectangular, or long narrow space or perhaps a massive terrace – but this will never lead you to the plan for your dream balcony or terrace garden. We’ll take. You through the Starter Kit Imaginator to help you sort out your dreams, need and Options.
#3: What’s Your Style?
Everyone has an individual style. It influences the way we present ourselves to the world, and affects the cloths we buy, the makeup we choose, the car we drive, and how we decorate our homes, including our balconies and terraces. Our upgraded Style Selector will be referenced to help you clearly define and understand your style. Remember style is not just about decoration!
#4: The Big Picture
Well designed balconies and terraces all have a unifying principle, a central theme and idea that creates cohesion, an integrated look. We’ll help you imagine an overall look for your balcony or terrace at the planning stage and get a feeling for the essence of your design.
#5: What Have You Got?
Now that you’ve worked out your needs, looked at the styles you like, and learned a bit about general design principles, we’ll take stock of what you’ve got to work with. So, before we go further, you’ll have to take stock of the physical opportunities and constrains. Where you are on the side or roof top of your building. We’ll look at the micro-climate and the positive or negative views and how to make lemonade out of lemons, so to speak! And the bases of that important information will be to guide you on how to measure and photograph your space. That information will be captured in a scaled 11”x 17” hand drawn illustration to be prepared by you. Don’t worry we’ve got you covered.
#6: Planning Your Design
To create a good design, you don’t have to draw a plan, but it can definitely help. Some people are able to assess their space instinctively without committing anything to paper. They have confidence to decide what they want to layout the lines, the shapes and. forms. For others, drawings a plan on paper or your iPad is a necessary exercise. Sketching out your design will force you to consider all your options. I’ll guide you through the process of creating your plan. And for those of you who find that a challenge for a nominal fee we can do it for you.
#7: Choosing Materials and Components
Until recently the choice of materials for hardscaping and softscaping a balcony or terrace wasn’t great. Whereas balconies and terraces are known as ‘exclusive use common areas’ and as such there are limitations about what your condo Board or Strata Council will permit you to do to upgrade your balcony. Material selection plays a big part in what determining what is possible and what will be accepted by your property manager. We’ve seen the good, the bad and ugly of material selection and what to accept and what to avoid.
#8: Getting Your Project Approved By Your Condo Board or Strata Council
The last place you want to be is on the wrong side of your property manager. They are there to help you achieve your goal to create a beautiful home and do it in a way that conforms to the Rules and Regulations of your condo community. We’ve will share with you our Application and Approval Process.
